Why You Feel Overwhelmed and Lost in Your Healing Journey
Today, I’ll be answering this question: Why do you feel so overwhelmed in your healing journey?
Actually, when I ask my clients why they want to work with me, the first thing they usually say is, “Because Edwin, I’m lost. I don’t know where to start. I’ve read about various approaches like the 12 steps, CBT, and coping strategies everywhere. I’ve read about all the tactics and everything I need to do to cope. I am just overwhelmed with everything.”
The main reason you feel overwhelmed in your healing journey is because you’re searching for strategies to deal with the symptoms. You’re looking for a strategy to handle anxiety, depression, loneliness, stress, and other symptoms.

However, these symptoms are actually manifestations of underlying root causes. If you develop strategies for each of these negative emotions, you would need thousands of strategies. You will also need to readjust on a daily basis because each new day comes with its own symptoms. Today it might be stress, in a few hours it might be paranoia, then anxiety etc. Naturally, you’ll feel overwhelmed because your life would be focused on finding ways to extinguish the flames as it appears instead of dealing with origin of fire.
Analogy:
Let’s consider the fire analogy in the context of healing and feeling overwhelmed. Imagine that your life represents a house that is engulfed in flames, symbolizing the various emotional struggles you’re experiencing. Instead of simply focusing on extinguishing the flames (i.e., dealing with symptoms), it’s essential to locate the source of the fire and address it directly (i.e., healing the root causes).
By solely attempting to put out the flames without understanding their origin, you’re bound to find yourself repeatedly battling the same fires. This approach is similar to solely managing symptoms without delving into the underlying issues. Consequently, you become overwhelmed because you’re constantly searching for coping mechanisms and strategies to handle each individual symptom.
To achieve lasting healing and reduce overwhelm, it’s crucial to identify the root causes that fuel these emotional fires. These root causes often stem from unresolved past experiences, deep-seated emotions, or lingering traumas. By acknowledging and addressing these underlying wounds, you can extinguish the source of the fire.
Dealing with Symptoms Won’t Lead to Permanent Transformation
Dealing only with symptoms or surface-level issues won’t lead you to lasting healing. You must identify and address the root causes — those original emotions, past experiences, and unresolved traumas. These are the origins of your present symptoms. By facing and healing these wounds, you’ll reach a point where you won’t experience manufactured emotions stemming from the past.

You Sit with Present Emotions Not Stuck Emotions
If you feel an emotion due to a present situation, you can easily manage it. That’s when you can “sit with” your emotion. But you can’t sit with stuck emotions from 10 or 30 years ago, those are part of who you currently think you are (your current false identity). You need to release or process them, and that’s what healing is all about — going to the root causes and doing the necessary work as quickly as possible. You can even transform in two months or less by addressing these underlying emotions, with proper tools.
Overwhelm Lessens When You Deal with Root Causes
Now, you can start living a life where your focus isn’t on finding strategies or coping mechanisms. You’ll be less overwhelmed because you won’t have to constantly search for ways to deal with these issues.
Proper Professional Help is Key
Working with a professional who understands these root causes is crucial. You don’t need to read everything about inner child work, trauma, and coping mechanisms. Just present yourself and commit to allowing someone like me to guide you on your journey. That’s the most important reason why seeking help is the best approach for your healing journey. You may want to do it alone, but seeking help is easier because it means you don’t have to read all those things. You don’t have to become an ‘expert’. You just have to commit and let someone guide you.
Seeking therapy can be compared to taking your car to a mechanic. Just as you trust the mechanic’s expertise to diagnose and fix your car, seeking proper therapy means trusting a trained professional to understand and support your emotional well-being. It’s an acknowledgement that you may not have all the answers (and you don’t even need to have all those answers) and you need proper guidance to address the root causes of your struggles, and finding relief from the overwhelm of navigating your inner world alone.
In conclusion, you feel overwhelmed because you’re logically searching for solutions to symptoms. To reduce this, overwhelm, seek help to address the root causes — the true sources of the symptoms in the first place.
