Maladaptive Daydreaming: When Your Daydreams Are Filled with Negative Vibes
Today I’ll be answering the question of why my daydreams are filled with negative vibes. Yeah, because what you see is people writing great stories with intricate storylines about how their dreams are beautiful. They’re having these relationships, and then, for you, you realize that your daydreams are so dark. You might be involved in a war, or people might be hating you. So, why is that?
Actually, I’m going to explain this in a very simple way. It can be a blessing in disguise when your daydreams are filled with negative vibes, especially when you’re experiencing maladaptive or compulsive daydreaming. It can be a blessing because something about negative vibes is that they are painful. When something is painful, you have the impetus to work on it, and you have the desire to really get out of it. I want you to imagine that your house is burning, and you really want to get out of it.
So, even if I try to explain to you whether it’s positive or negative, some people might say it’s because of personality, it’s because of a habit. But does it really matter? No, it doesn’t.
What matters is the impact of your daydreams on the quality of your real life. When you focus on that, you get to the point where you make your real life okay, to the point where the mind doesn’t pull you into this imaginary world. It’s still an imaginary world. Don’t focus on the positivity or negativity; just focus on the fact that it’s giving you these negative vibes.
Once you get out of it, focus on dealing with your real-life issues because the more you focus on dealing with your real-life issues, the less your mind will pull you into this imaginary world. That’s what managing daydreaming is all about.
It’s not about understanding the content of the daydream because you might dwell too much on wanting to understand or wanting to change the content to something positive just because other people are writing beautiful things about it. But no, look at your real life.
Is it affecting your real life? Yes, it is affecting your life. What are you doing about it? Those are the key components of your journey — just understanding the effect it has on your real life, not understanding the content of the daydream.
You don’t need to understand it because even if you try to understand it, you’ll just be drawing conclusions that are not facts. Just conclusions like, “This is because of that.” Even if I explain to you, “This is because of that,” it’s still a conclusion and not a fact.
The only fact we know is that daydreaming is affecting your life, and that’s what you need to work on. So, don’t dwell too much on wanting to understand why it’s negative but focus on how you are dealing with it in your real life to manage your daydreaming. Something beautiful will happen when you start managing your real life. Probably, you’ll start managing your daydreams as well, which means you can manage the content of your daydreams. So, focus on dealing with underlying issues and dealing with things in real life.
