Finding Balance in the Healing Journey: The Importance of Taking a Break

Have you ever found yourself in a state where you feel like your life or daily work is solely dedicated to healing or working on yourself? Perhaps you spend hours on morning, afternoon, and evening rituals, and even the basic chores of life seem like distractions from your healing journey. It may sound familiar, especially when you begin to see improvements in yourself, but sometimes you may overdo it or reach a point where it becomes an obsession.

That’s the trap I briefly mentioned before, and I’ve fallen for it a couple of times. Now, I am more aware of it — the trap of constantly compartmentalizing life into “spiritual” things, “tools,” or “practices,” to the extent that you feel resentful when you can’t engage in them or powerless when you lack the money for the next retreat.

Don’t get me wrong; these tools are therapeutic and can greatly impact your life. They have their place, and when used mindfully, they enhance your awareness of the present moment, which includes both pleasant and unpleasant experiences that are part of life.

However, the irony occurs when we become obsessed with these tools. We get caught up in the potential outcomes of using them or the mere act of practicing them, to the point where we neglect the present moment that these tools are meant to guide us towards.

This is the paradox of “doing so much in your healing journey” — you can end up feeling fatigued and mechanically performing rituals just out of habit. Instead of these practices improving your life, they can make it worse by providing a convenient escape from reality.

You might invest more and more in retreats, new therapies, and inner child techniques, yet the present moments slip away.

So, when we’re not aware, we may inadvertently undo the work we’re doing in our lives. Instead of allowing our insights to process and integrate into our daily experiences, we jump to the next thing, leading to burnout and a feeling that nothing is effective. It’s like untying a knot — if you start with one end and follow that line carefully, it unties smoothly. But if you approach it from different angles, you risk making the whole knot worse without understanding what works and what doesn’t.

That’s why sometimes, you need to give yourself a break in your journey and simply observe. You might not need another practice session or ritual; perhaps you just need to see your life clearly as it is now.

Keeping it simple — observing, feeling, and being aware — is what you’ve been practicing all along. If all you do is seek out another practice to enhance your awareness, you might miss what you’re truly looking for.

Give yourself a break, acknowledge any discomfort, and you might realize that you’ve already done enough. Take that step back, stop stirring the pot, and breathe in fresh air. Your mind needs rest to process what you’re already aware of. This pause from rituals, allowing your mind to explore new pathways to find what suits you best, is where true therapy lies.
