Today I’ll be addressing the question of how to determine if someone is lying about the future they promise in a relationship or if they are genuinely honest about it. This situation often arises when you’re dating someone and they talk extensively about the future you’ll have together. They make grand promises about making you happy, taking care of the kids, or investing in shared ventures once they complete their ongoing projects. As a result, you become emotionally invested in the relationship, envisioning a future that aligns with your deepest desires, such as owning a house by the mountains, lake, or beach and having two children.

However, it’s important not to get carried away by the future promises to the extent that you overlook the current state of the relationship. So, how can you tell if someone is being dishonest about the future? Here are some signs to consider:

Inconsistent statements: Pay attention to inconsistencies in their promises. For instance, if one day they claim they’ll build you a house by the beach and the next week they mention a house in the mountains, it raises doubts about the authenticity of their promises. When you notice such discrepancies, it’s natural to question their sincerity.

Inconsistent follow-through: Future promises are often accompanied by smaller commitments made in the present. They may promise to watch your favorite show or cook dinner for you the next day. However, if they consistently fail to fulfill these smaller commitments, it’s a red flag. Don’t disregard these small promises as inconsequential, as they can reflect their overall reliability and commitment.

Withholding information: If someone talks about a future endeavor but consistently withholds specific details or evades discussing the steps required to achieve it, it indicates a lack of transparency. For example, if they avoid discussing the specifics of an investment they plan to make, stating they’ll inform you “when the time comes,” it’s a sign of potential deception. They may be using the allure of a future together to keep you engaged without any intention of following through.

Lack of commitment or reluctance: Look for signs of commitment in the present moment. A person who genuinely envisions a future with you will engage in conversations about long-term plans and actively work with you to establish a clear path toward those goals. If they show a lack of commitment, seem hesitant to discuss the future, or avoid taking concrete steps together, it indicates that their promises may be empty.

Too good to be true feeling: Trust your intuition. If you meet someone who seems to know everything about you, mirrors your preferences, and feels too good to be true, take a step back. It’s possible that they are wearing a facade and presenting themselves as the perfect match to lure you into the relationship. This mirroring technique can create a sense of intimacy and make you believe that they genuinely understand and share your desires.

If you experience an anxious feeling or a gut instinct that something is off, take the time to pause and evaluate the relationship. Don’t rush things solely based on future promises.

Conclusion

Remember that you are still in the present moment, and any future you envision will eventually become the present. If you encounter undesirable behavior or issues early on, address them promptly rather than postponing resolution until later stages when you’re more emotionally invested. This proactive approach prevents you from being deceived or used for personal gain by someone who lied about their intentions.

Always assess the relationship based on its current state. By doing so, you can make informed decisions and avoid potential heartache caused by false future promises.
