What Does It Mean to Be Committed in Your Healing Journey?
If there’s one thing that will steer you forward in your healing journey, it is commitment. It’s a commitment to yourself, a commitment to the right cause, and a pure dedication to break free from the binds of abuse.
But what does it really mean to be committed? Is it just empty talk, or is it a deep, passionate sense of wanting better?
The Oxford dictionary defines commitment as “the quality of being dedicated to a cause.” When you’re dedicated, you’re willing to do whatever it takes.
Commitment to your healing means making a conscious and dedicated choice to prioritize your own well-being and recover from the emotional and psychological scars that others have inflicted on your life. It’s about being willing to wholeheartedly go all the way in the quest to free yourself from past hurts, traumas, or conditioning.
It’s about being willing to invest all your energy into understanding what made you susceptible to toxic people and what you can do to keep yourself safe from them.
It’s about facing your fears instead of running away from them. It’s about dedicating yourself to building a relationship with yourself, even when every bone in your body is unwilling to do so.
Commitment is taking the initiative to do the work, even when you don’t know exactly how to do it.
It’s about investing in a coaching program if you have the capacity because you truly want it. It’s about showing up and taking advantage of free programs when you don’t have the means to get professional help.
It’s admitting that you may not have the ability to do it on your own and seeking help is part of the commitment. You’re seeking help for yourself and not for the therapist to keep their job. Commitment is about taking action that will help you grow, even when you don’t have a clear vision of your ideal self.
It’s about being deeply honest with yourself and acting even when your mind is resisting that change. It’s about understanding that you’re not “okay,” and there’s no need to pretend to be.
Commitment is also about understanding that the journey will be uncomfortable, but it’s a better discomfort that leads to transformation than being stuck with your current inner discomfort. It’s acknowledging that the journey requires patience and perseverance, but you’re still willing to push on the road less traveled.
Commitment is about understanding that you’re doing it for yourself, and you deserve it. It’s not about comparing your traumas or experiences and labeling your experience as the worst; it’s about looking at what’s stopping you from being authentic and working on that. It’s not about fighting with the narcissists; it’s about ‘fighting’ with your inner demons. It’s about wanting to overcome those negative beliefs you have about yourself. It’s not about building walls; it’s about deeply embodying your boundaries and feeling safe within.
It’s not about accepting labels and seeing your problems as a part of you; it’s about wanting to work on those problems, even when your mind or even the experts tell you it’s not possible. It’s about persevering even when your family is not supportive of you.
Commitment is a journey for you, and you should be willing to take corrective action. Your true nature can only be love and authenticity. Corrective action is all about being willing to unlearn and relearn all those negativities you’ve picked up from your environment.
So, are you committed? The only one who can answer this is you. Have you been using the same techniques and getting inconsistent results? If so, change your commitment by opening yourself up to new techniques and possibilities.
It’s the willingness to try multiple healing modalities until you’re free from the past. It’s not about concluding that nothing works for you, but about acknowledging that if A didn’t work for you, then B, C, D… through Z might work for you.
Commitment is a conscious choice to bring the unconscious to light. It’s a conscious choice to shine a light on your unhealed parts or your ‘inner demons.’ If you’re struggling with commitment, you can consciously affirm or have a mantra like, “I am willing to do whatever it takes to be free from the past.”
Affirmation can help with strengthening your dedication and commitment towards your healing or towards taking corrective action in your healing journey. It’s not a substitute to healing the unconscious but it can provide conscious reinforcement to your fragile commitment, it can reinforce that conscious choice to go for therapy or to work on those deep stuff.
The only one who can save you in your healing journey is your commitment and recommitment, be willing to do whatever it takes for you. You were willing to do whatever it takes to save the relationship, now change the perspective to be willing to do whatever it takes to be free from the past, to be present and to thrive. You deserve better, even when you don’t feel like you do. You have support even when you feel like everyone is against you.
Lastly, commitment becomes easier once you start working on yourself. It becomes easier once you start climbing up the dark pit of hopelessness and despair, even when you don’t see the exit. It becomes easier when you just start. When you start, you gain small bits of revelation that show you glimpses of what’s possible if you keep going.
Even when I write, there are times when I struggle with the commitment to keep going. But once I start, I enter a state of flow — a state where I know there’s no turning back. Stay committed to your healing journey, and you will find yourself in a place where you have come so far that going back to your unhealthy patterns is simply not an option or even a thought.
