Today I’ll be addressing the question: Why is it that some actions or things you did while you were in that relationship don’t make sense at all when you think about them after leaving?

Here’s the thing: when you’re in the midst of doing something, especially when it’s become a routine or habit, you may not realize its lack of sense. Take, for example, eating junk food. While indulging in the act, you might not be aware of its harmful effects because you’re caught up in the moment, not thinking about the consequences. This state of being stuck in thought prevents you from seeing beyond it.

Similarly, when stuck in an abusive relationship, you may engage in unimaginable actions to survive. You might lie, accept physical abuse, or not stand up for yourself, as these seem like the only options within the confined walls of that relationship. It becomes a habitual, almost autopilot response. When you’re stuck, your responses may not make logical sense, as your mind has become accustomed to that environment.

Once you break free from this situation, you gain a different perspective. After healing, you start regaining your sense because your judgment had been clouded by past experiences, pain, anger, and resentment. These negative emotions distort your judgment, leading you to do things that may not make logical sense. Upon healing, you begin to see things more clearly, asking yourself how you could have done those things.

Instead of being hard on yourself, understand that in that moment, those actions made sense. You were a different person then, viewing things through a different lens. Once you get out and start the healing process, you see things from a clearer, more logical standpoint. So, instead of self-blame, take full responsibility, work on cleansing your lens by dealing with the pain, and gradually your judgment will become clearer.

Go easy on yourself, and remember that you’ve grown beyond those actions.
