Think Outside the Box: When You Feel That Healing Is Not Possible for Someone Like You

Today, I’ll be explaining a very common them, especially for those who have been in an abusive relationship or experienced a traumatic childhood. It’s the feeling that healing is not possible for someone like you. You might genuinely believe that your traumas were the worst, enduring years of hardship since childhood, and it seems impossible for you to heal. You genuinely convince yourself that no help will work for someone like you, as if you’re scarred beyond assistance. I’ve even heard someone close to me jokingly say that for someone like them, the therapist would have to undergo massive therapy to be able to help them. It’s entirely ‘normal’ to think this way, especially when you’ve been in those hurtful environments and exposed yourself to online forums where discouragement about the possibility or duration of healing is prevalent — especially if you were involved with a narcissist and endured hurtful experiences for an extended period. This further embeds the belief and keeps the thought stuck in your mind that healing is not possible, reinforced by evidence from other survivors.

The mind, having become accustomed to this pain, will provide any reason or excuse to keep you stuck in that familiar state — the comfort zone of familiar pain. Your current self-perception, or identity or ego, seeks self-preservation, and it prefers staying where it is, even if it means enduring pain.

It’s challenging to break through this mindset, but understand that it’s not the authentic you speaking; it’s the part of you that has become accustomed to pain, trying to keep you trapped. Healing is possible for anyone but because your current identity seeks preservation and may resist change and it will lead you to picking instances that prove healing is not a possibility.

Think Outside the Box

One effective way to challenge this belief is to read stories of people who have overcome severe challenges in life. Yes, read stories of other survivors who’ve overcome this or others who’ve been in worse situations and have overcome it. You will not find those mostly on online forums; you will find them mostly in books. Read even stories about other human beings who don’t even have basic needs but still find ways to overcome, to survive and even thrive in life. It’s more of looking and thinking outside the box which your thoughts have confined you in. These stories serve as motivation and show the possibilities of healing. You will start seeing things from a different perspective, and slowly but surely, you will realize that you’re not that bad or that scarred after all. Eventually, you will heal from whatever you went through. Avoid focusing on those who are still stuck, but instead, seek inspiration from those who have triumphed over diseases, loss, or trauma.

Do not let your mind convince you that healing is impossible. Instead, seek help and consider that even a slight belief in the possibility of healing can be the initial spark that propels you forward in your journey. I’ve witnessed individuals overcome challenges they believed would take ages, simply by having that tiny faith that healing is possible.

Imagine how your life could be once you overcome this pain — more opportunities, a peaceful existence, and healthier relationships. Overcoming the pain you once thought insurmountable will change your perspective on life, allowing you to see things from a different angle. This is the essence of healing and breaking free from the box you’ve grown accustomed to. Do not let your tainted thoughts keep take the driving seat in your life but instead think outside the box.
