Maladaptive Daydreaming: Why Is It Hard to Manage Your Excessive Daydreaming?
Today, I’ll be addressing the main challenges when it comes to managing or stopping excessive daydreaming. There are two primary challenges here.
The first challenge is that daydreaming is something you carry within your mind. It’s not like you can isolate yourself to make it stop. The more you try to resist it, you’re still left with the same thoughts. When something is driven by your thoughts, and you don’t need external circumstances to engage in it, it becomes challenging to stop. For instance, with gaming addiction, you can sometimes control it by selling your gaming equipment, but daydreaming is different. You can’t give away your mind, and merely thinking about stopping daydreaming exacerbates it.
The second challenge lies in the counterintuitive nature of trying to stop daydreaming. Instead of focusing on stopping daydreaming itself, you should focus on addressing the underlying causes. You should consider what aspects of your real life lead you to use daydreaming as a coping mechanism, whether it’s dealing with stress or anxiety.
Another aspect that makes it challenging to stop is the positive effects of daydreaming. While it may have negative consequences in your life, it also provides enjoyment, such as imaginary friends and social interactions in your daydreams, especially if they are filled with positive experiences. This enjoyment can make you reluctant to stop, even when you know it’s negatively impacting your real life.
People often say they don’t want to stop daydreaming because they enjoy it and don’t see it as disturbing anyone. However, even if you don’t initially want to stop, there may come a point where the accumulated stresses and anxieties from your real life become overwhelming. At that point, you might be compelled to work on them and prioritize your real life over daydreaming.
