Maladaptive Daydreaming: How Do You Move on From Your Ex When You Daydream About Them?

Maladaptive Daydreaming: How Do You Move on From Your Ex When You Daydream About Them? maladaptive daydreaming: how do you move on from your ex when you daydream about them?

Today I’ll address the question of how to move on from an ex whom you often daydream about. This is an intriguing topic, as I’ve come across someone who’s struggling with daydreaming about an ex who betrayed them. They find themselves constantly fantasizing about the past or creating scenarios in their mind regarding a future with this person. This can include thoughts like, “What if they’re not toxic anymore? What if they’ve changed and are treating me well?”

The issue here isn’t about stopping the daydreaming, which may be preventing you from moving on. What’s really holding you back is the negative emotions you still carry towards your ex. Moving on is about releasing these emotions of anger and resentment that are connected to your past relationship. These emotions aren’t directed at your ex; they’re within you. Even if you try to use willpower to stop daydreaming, it won’t work. Instead, you need to process these emotions that you’re carrying — emotions of hatred, betrayal, and other negative feelings.

Working on yourself means dealing with these emotions, and that’s what moving on is all about. Daydreaming is just a coping mechanism for these emotions. The actual process of moving on revolves around processing these emotions.

Once you’ve processed these emotions, you’ll reach a point where you can daydream about your ex without it leading to negative emotions or feelings of anger and resentment. This is what healing entails — not forgetting, but releasing the negative emotions associated with past events and current feelings.

In the end, it’s not the content of your daydreams that matters; it’s the feelings you experience in the present moment when you think about daydreaming about your ex. Working on these emotions is the key to truly moving on.
